Bike campers need ‘BOB’ to carry their gear

If you're getting ready to take a camping trip by bicycle, you really need to meet my friend "BOB."

No, BOB isn't a person, and not really a personal friend: BOB (short of the brand name "Beast of Burden") makes some of the finest bicycle trailers in the world (as well as strollers for your tots, too).

The BOB bicycle trailer comes in two models -- the Ibex and the Yak. The Ibex, a newer more expensive model, has a built-in suspension system, supposedly to smooth out and stabilize the ride at higher loads and higher speeds. But if you look around a bit, you'll find just about as many diehards who still love their faithful Yak even after trying the Ibex. One big consideration is weight. Reportedly, the Ibex adds more than 5 pounds to the Yak's weight with that suspension system.

Reviewers who have used the BOB Ibex and Yak report they ride so smoothly that it's easy to forget you're pulling a trailer behind your bike. One criticism I heard in a couple of places, however, is that the rear fender on the Ibex fails to eliminate "rooster tails" of water when you're traveling at any speed in the rain. (In that case, the person complaining said he simply modified the fender to give better coverage to better block the wheel spray-off.) Reviews were pretty evenly split between those who still preferred the Yak and those who love the newer Ibex. Take your choice.

Both BOB bicycle trailer models are terrifically useful, practical tools for taking that bicycle camping trip.
