How to find plenty of usable water for camping
sponsored links
Dehydration is one of the biggest issues hikers and campers can face, yet many casual campers never think about how to deal with camping water issues. A camping trip calls for plenty of usable water wherever you're headed. Here are three quick tips to keep in mind whether you're headed off on that weekend family camp out or a serious trail trek.
1. Take as much clean, consumable water as you are reasonably able to take. Of course, depending on the nature of your trip and the space available, there will be limits. I had a friend who stored 42 5-gallon sealed plastic pales of water in his basement in preparation for that Y2K crisis that never happened back in 2000. Think of how smug he would've felt if our city's water system had been paralyzed for, oh, say a month or more. DON'T do such "overkill" when planning your camping trip, but DO be sure to take along as much usable, good water as is practical. (Obviously, hikers and bicycle campers are severely limited as to how much water they can carry. For specific help with that, see tip 3.)
2. Pick your camping site near clean, usable water in a stream or lake. Unfortunately, even in some pretty remote country, it is getting hard to find clean, safe drinking water in our streams and lakes. But try your best to have readily accessible, usable water near your camp site.
3. Bring along a good water purification and/or filtration system. Whether you're an individual on a hiking trip or a family camping out, you can find a wide variety of water filtration and purification kits that are portable and easy to use. Many are simple and small enough to work for a bicycle camper or solitary hiker. Such kits will let you turn most (not all, but MOST) streams or lakes into a source of potable water. Such water systems or kits work to eliminate toxins or harmful microbes or both. If you have never bought something like this before, you may want to consult someone in a quality camping, sporting goods, or outdoors store who can show you what's available and help fit the solutions to your specific needs.
