Lighter-weight dome tents may be good choice for family camping
sponsored links
There are several light dome tents available that may be good choices for family camping trips.
As mentioned elsewhere, dome tents offer a good blend of space and, if properly secured, tent comfort for family camping. They are, however, sometimes large enough and heavy enough that they aren't a great choice especially if you're hiking. (If you're loading tents, camping gear, sleeping gear, and the whole works into a vehicle, weight and bulk may not be a big problem.
But there are some relatively light-weight, roomy dome tent choices out there. One excellent choice is the Kelty Trail Dome 6 tent. The Kelty 6 is roomy and weighs in at about 14 and a half pounds. Considering the "6" means it's a six-person tent, that's not bad. It's rated as three-season, meaning it's probably good to go for all but serious winter weather.
In general, you'll find great combinations of dome tent quality and light dome tent "packability" in such brands as Kelty, MSR, The North Face, Nemo, and others.
(For the "rugged individualist" into high-end, high-tech mountaineering at an outstanding price, check out the single-person Marmot Alpinist tent for great quality and a light-weight dome tent, weighing in fully loaded at only 5 and a half pounds.)
If you do your homework and look around carefully, you'll find quality light-weight dome tents ideally suited to family camping and individual hiking fun.
